Per-Instrument Mixing Chains
Every instrument has its own frequency range, dynamic character, and role in the mix. Here’s how to process each one from individual channels through parallel processing.
Important: Route all parallel sends back into the instrument group. This ensures the blended signal gets proper stem processing.
Vocals (Lead, Doubles, BGVs)
Inserts: Subtractive EQ → Functional Comp → Transient Shaper → Channel Strip → Vintage EQ/Comp → Saturation → Manny Tone Shaper → Vitamin → Smart:EQ (Lead vs. BGVs).
Parallel Processing:
- Parallel Compression
- Parallel Distortion
- Parallel Air
- Parallel Reverb/Delay: Short Plate, Slap (HPF @ 300Hz, blend low).
Drums (Kick, Snare, Toms, OH, Rooms)
Inserts: Subtractive EQ → Functional Comp → Transient Shaper → Channel Strip → UA 1176 / Distressor → Manny Tone Shaper → Vitamin → Smart:EQ.
Parallel Processing:
- Parallel Compression: CLA-76 (Smash) — Fast attack/release.
- Parallel Distortion: Berzerk or J37 — Aggressive EQ.
- Parallel Reverb: Short Room (Blend low for snap).
Guitars (Electric & Acoustic)
Inserts: Subtractive EQ → Functional Comp → Transient Shaper → Channel Strip → Saturation → Manny Tone Shaper → Vitamin → Smart:EQ.
Parallel Processing: Parallel Distortion, Parallel Compression.
Bass (DI & Amp)
Inserts: Subtractive EQ → Functional Comp → Channel Strip → Multi-band Comp → Manny Tone Shaper → Vitamin → Tape.
Parallel Processing:
- Parallel Distortion: Berzerk or J37 — EQ for “clank.”
- Parallel Compression: CLA-76 for sustain.
- Optional Transient Shaping on DI track for pick attack.
Keys / Synths
Inserts: Subtractive EQ → Functional Comp → Transient Shaper → Channel Strip → Saturation → Manny Tone Shaper → Vitamin → Smart:EQ.
Parallel Processing: Parallel Distortion (HPF 150–300Hz), Parallel Compression.
